This term the Year One students have been working on the topic ‘natural features’ in Geography. In English we have been reading a series of picture books by WA author Kylie Howarth. We then decided to look at the picture book ‘Sam’s Bush Journey’ by Sally Morgan an indigenous author. We explored the natural features in this text and how Bronwyn Bancroft illustrated the different parts of the story.
YARN STICKS
The students then completed the following activities:
- A personal yarn stick using different coloured wool. Each student chose colours that were personally significant in nature to them and wrapped them around a stick found during a nature walk.
- A writing sample based on the student’s choice of wool colour and their meanings to them personally.
Scratch pictures
The students then completed the following activities:
- A reading comprehension activity on identifying the main details in the text ‘Sam’s Bush Journey’. This is our current comprehension focus.
- A scratch drawing to show all the natural features around us. We used the illustrations from the text ‘Sam’s Bush Journey’ to inspire our drawings.
